Labelling

Labelling means providing consumers with information on active energy supply offers, through the percentage contributions (mix) of primary energy resources used in the production of the electricity they consume and the respective environmental impacts.

It aims to achieve the following main objectives:

  • Distinction between suppliers and their commercial offers
Allows consumers to make their choice based on a criterion other than price, which may enhance greater competition in the retail market by fostering new offers
  • Making consumers responsible for their consumption choices
Allows consumers to make more informed consumption choices, namely by taking into account the environmental impacts caused by the electricity they consume

The electricity labelling rules, which came into force on 1 January 2019, are defined in ERSE’s Directive No 16/2018, of 13 December, according to which suppliers must disclose the following information to consumers:

    Energy mix

  • Quarterly mix
  • Mix of the last 4 quarters
  • Mix of the previous calendar year

    Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions

  • Specific CO2 emissions in the previous calendar year
  • Total CO2 emissions for each invoice sent to customers
  • Additional information on environmental impacts related to the supplier’s electricity supply, according to the indicative format made available by ERSE

For this purpose, ERSE provides suppliers with quarterly (basic system mix) and annual (emission factors) support information.
