ERSE publishes report on the technical performance of electricity network operators in 2024
09/10/2025
The Energy Services Regulatory Authority (ERSE) has today released its 2024 Technical Quality of Service Report for the electricity sector. The report assesses the quality of the electricity supply provided by transmission and distribution network operators to consumers.
The quality of electricity supply service provided to customers is measured using continuity of supply indicators, as well as indicators that monitor the electrical power quality.
Thus, in 2024, the National Transmission Grid, operated by REN - Rede Eléctrica Nacional, showed an improvement in general continuity of supply indicators compared to 2023. Although there were three unplanned interruptions (one long interruption and two short interruptions), individual continuity of supply standards were fully met at all delivery points. .
In the National Distribution Network operated by E-REDES, the average number of long and short interruptions decreased, though the average duration of long interruptions increased due to exceptional events with a significant impact, such as fires in the North and Centre regions and Storm Kirk. A total of €993,000 was paid in compensation to high, medium and low voltage (HV, MV and LV) customers for non-compliance with individual continuity of supply indicators, which is double the figure recorded in 2023.
Continuity of supply indicators improved in the Autonomous Regions of the Azores and Madeira, whose network operators are EDA and EEM, respectively.
EDA recorded three non-compliances with the individual standards, which is a 75% reduction compared to 2023. They paid compensation to MV and LV customers totalling €1,012, which is higher than the previous year. Meanwhile, EEM recorded 136 non-compliances with the individual standards, paying compensation to MV and LV customers totalling €1,847 — a 40% increase on 2023.
To strengthen access to the information produced by ERSE for all stakeholders, an ERSExplica brochure highlighting the main continuity of supply indicators in low-voltage distribution networks has been published. The aim is to facilitate access to information and promote energy literacy among consumers.
