The delegation of ERSE – the Energy Services Regulatory Authority, led by its Chairman, Pedro Verdelho, participated in the VIII World Forum on Energy Regulation (WFER), held in Lima, Peru, from 22 to 25 August this year.

The event, attended by representatives of regulators from more than 50 countries, focused on “The Energy Transformation Challenge: competitiveness and sustainability of energy markets, opportunities and achievements”, based on four critical pillars: competitiveness, governance, energy transition and universal access to energy.

Pedro Verdelho, who is also Vice-President of CEER - the Council of European Energy Regulators, held a training session on 22 August with Alberto Pototschnig, Deputy Director of World of Practice and Professor at the Florence School of Regulation, on “Market Integration of Renewable Energies”, aimed at exploring the impact of the growing penetration of renewables on electricity markets and systems.

The ERSE Chairman also participated as a speaker in the session “Secure and sustainable: opposites or mutually reinforcing goals?”, on 23 August.

Another topic analysed at the VIII World Forum on Energy Regulation was “The energy transition: opportunities for the development of critical materials and the role of the regulator in the new phase”. On 23 August, Paulo Oliveira of ERSE’s Infrastructure and Networks Division gave a presentation on “Innovation and disruptive technologies - the role of the regulator and the dilemmas we face”.

ERSE’s contribution to the discussion on the new challenges of the energy transition also included a presentation on 24 August by Natalie McCoy, of ERSE’s International Relations Office,  on “Towards Universal Access – empowering and educating the consumer”.
