The president of ERSE - Energy Services Regulatory Authority, Pedro Verdelho, participated in the Debate "Dialogue with stakeholders on the Fit for 55 legislative package of the European Ecological Pact", promoted by the European Commission Representation in Portugal, on November 19th.

"This package, now presented in the wake of the Green Deal, is crucial. It is very extensive, focusing on numerous sectors of activity and energy sectors. It has a holistic perspective in terms of integrating energy systems and business sectors. We are talking about a system of systems. This is the key to the solution to ensure an economy with zero greenhouse gas emissions in 2050", highlighted Pedro Verdelho.

In this context, he added, "the issue of market integration is fundamental. The work carried out in Portugal and in Europe in the last few years is crucial for this decarbonization process".

The president of ERSE also underlined that "the goals ahead of us are achievable". A position that is based on the profound energy change registered in the national energy matrix, between 1995 and 2020. "Portugal doubled the penetration of renewables in terms of primary energy. There was also a substantial reduction of the most polluting fossil fuels, from 85% to 44%. This gives us confidence," said Pedro Verdelho.

The solution, reinforces the president of ERSE, is to create an energy economy of proximity, with the empowerment of consumers, highlighting the need to "promote the democratization of access to the generation activity by consumers, also known as prosumers," and to foster energy communities and energy efficiency.
