World Energy Day | ERSE publishes new book on Biofuels: from production processes to the market

29/05/2025

As part of today's World Energy Day celebrations, ERSE - the Energy Services Regulatory Authority, is publishing a new paper in its Energy Topics series on "Biofuels: from production processes to the market", the result of a collaboration between ERSE and the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST).

In this book, the authors Henrique Aníbal Santos de Matos, António Domingues, Hugo Pires Costa and Ana Lúcia Costa, with the collaboration of Pedro Pereira and Pedro Martins, have endeavoured to survey the state of the art on liquid biofuels incorporated at national and European level.

Bioenergy is a fundamental vector for moving towards carbon neutrality, and liquid biofuels are essential for promoting the energy transition in the transport sector, particularly in the segments that are most difficult to decarbonise, such as aeronautical, maritime and long-haul land transport.

This work is the result not only of this realisation, but also of the usefulness of bringing together an extensive body of literature that is available, but perhaps dispersed, covering aspects such as raw materials, industrial processes and market valuation.

The aim is also to emphasise the role that bioenergy can play in the journey towards greater energy independence. Portugal has a mature sector that produces an important part of the liquid biofuels incorporated into the national market, as well as significant potential for development in this area.

Temas de Energia is an ERSE publication that includes works and articles, individual or collective, of an opinion or technical-scientific nature, which express solely the position of their authors, in areas as diverse as energy, regulation, economics, engineering, competition, or law, and which is intended to share knowledge, fostering the discussion of topics of interest to energy regulation.
