ERSE - the Energy Services Regulatory Authority - held a technical meeting with GESEL - the Electricity Sector Study Group of Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, in Lisbon on 29 May 2023, to discuss experiences in the field of storage and decarbonisation of the Portuguese energy matrix.

The initiative, part of a cooperation protocol signed between the two bodies in 2018, focused in particular on the role of reversible hydropower plants and battery systems in storage processes.

The meeting was attended by Ricardo Loureiro, member of ERSE’s Board of Directors, Nivalde de Castro, coordinator of GESEL, Vítor Santos, professor at ISEG - Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão (Lisbon School of Economics and Management), and representatives of ANEEL - Agência Nacional de Energia Elétrica (National Electric Energy Agency), BNDES - Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social (National Bank for Economic and Social Development), EPE - Empresa de Pesquisa Energética (Energy Research Company), ONS - Operador Nacional do Sistema Elétrico (National Electric System Operator) and TCU - Tribunal de Contas da União (the Federal Court of Auditors).

The Memorandum of Understanding signed between ERSE and GESEL - the Electricity Sector Study Group of the Institute of Economics of Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro - aims to develop research projects, organise events and prepare academic and scientific articles and books.
